About the Event

Our Annual Reception & Dinner is to be held in the St Trinnean’s Room, St Leonard’s Hall.

Our Guest Speaker has been changed last-minute. We will now be having an informal after-dinner talk by Dr Marie Macpherson.

Dr Macpherson graduated from Strathclyde University with an Honours degree in English and Russian and was then awarded a PhD in Russian Literature for her thesis on the nineteenth century Russian writer, Mikhail Lermontov. She endured a year in the Soviet Union on a British Council Scholarship to carry out research in the universities of Moscow and Leningrad. Marie taught in the Russian Department of Edinburgh University before going abroad to teach English with the British Council. She later returned to teach at the Institute for Applied Language Studies at Edinburgh University.

However, this Honest Lass - raised in Musselburgh on the site of the Battle of Pinkie - never lost her love of Scottish history and on settling in Gifford she rekindled her interest in the history of 16th century Scotland. The rich history of East Lothian during the Reformation provided the inspiration for the Knox Trilogy, a fictional account of the life of the Scottish reformer, John Knox, and his connection with the Haddington.

She is now researching the accused of James VI’s witchcraft trials in 1590.

The title of her talk will be 'John Knox the Man Behind the Myth: Surprising things you didn't know about the fiery Scottish Reformer'.

The meal will have three courses, including:

Sourdough bread & Edinburgh butter (v)

New season asparagus & boiled free-range egg, confit tomato emulsion & baby herb salad (v)

Best end of lamb, layered potato & vegetables, garden pea purée (gf)

Lemon posset, poached Edinburgh Gin rhubarb & shortbread (v)

Fairtrade tea & coffee with Scottish tablet will be served after the meal.

Vegetarian options are available. Please let us know of any dietary requirements when ordering tickets.

Red and white wine will be served and a selection of non-alcoholic beverages will be available.

Dress code is semi formal or smart casual.
